Former Lady Cav hurdles to win

Virginia Union freshman Johniqua Porter (Lakeland) won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.61 seconds at the VMI Winter Relays in Lexington Saturday.

Porter’s victory was one of three on the day for the Lady Panther track squad. Porter finished fifth in the 55-meter dash in 7.57.

Virginia Union will be in the CIAA Championships Friday and Saturday in Hampton.

St. Augustine’s men’s track team will also be traveling to Hampton for the CIAA Championships and the Falcons will be the No. 1-ranked team in the nation in NCAA Division II according to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Christopher Copeland (Lakeland) is a junior high jumper for the Falcons. Copeland won the NCAA Div. II national championship in the 2010 indoor season and finished runner-up nationally in the outdoor season.

Virginia Tech junior Keith Ricks set a season-best time, 21.58 seconds, in finishing fourth in the 200-meter dash last weekend in the VT Elite Meet in Blacksburg. Ricks was part of a Hokie season-best 4×400-meter relay performance, 3:14.19, that placed the Hokies second on the day.
