Conference wins for past Warriors, Bulldogs

Winthrop won a Big South men’s basketball contest 75-68 over Charleston Southern Thursday night in Rock Hill, S.C.

Junior guard Andre Jones (Nansemond River) led the Eagles with 17 points, including 3-for-5 three-point shooting and three assists.

The win moved the Eagles (12-12, 8-6) into third place in the Big South standings. Winthrop hosts first-place Coastal Carolina (23-2, 14-0) Saturday.

Elizabeth City State (14-8, 8-6 CIAA) upset visiting Bowie State (18-4, 12-2) with a 77-52 blowout win Thursday in Elizabeth City, N.C.

Junior point guard Marquie Cooke (Nansemond River) had a busy all-around night with six points, eight rebounds and six assists for ECSU.

The Vikings continue down the stretch in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association play by visiting Chowan Saturday for a 5 p.m. tip.

In women’s hoops, No. 16-ranked Georgetown romped over visiting South Florida 67-38 in a Big East game Tuesday night.

Lady Hoya sophomore TaShauna Rodgers (King’s Fork) poured in 25 points, mainly thanks to 7-for-11 three-point shooting. Rodgers added six steals and five rebounds.

Rodgers is averaging 18.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. She’s shooting 35.5 percent from three-point range and 81.8 percent at the foul line.

The Lady Hoyas (20-5, 8-3) have won six straight games. GU travels to meet St. John’s Sunday afternoon.

Chowan rolled to a 79-49 win over Lincoln in a CIAA game in Murfreesboro, N.C. Thursday evening.

Junior guard Ransheda Jennings (King’s Fork) led CU with 20 points, making 7-of-10 field goals. She added seven boards and three assists.

On the season, Jennings is averaging team-highs in points (16.4 per game), assists (2.8), steals (2.7) and blocks (0.6).

The Lady Hawks (12-10, 9-5) have their home finale Saturday at 1 p.m. versus Elizabeth City St.

Devenuto

It’s already spring for Mount Olive softball as the Lady Trojans split a doubleheader at UNC-Pembroke Wednesday, losing game one 3-1 and winning game two 6-3.

Junior Sarah Saunders (Lakeland) started and pitched a complete game for Mt. Olive in the opener.

Junior Katie Devenuto (Lakeland) turned in big offensive and defensive plays for the Lady Trojans in the win.

In the home half of the fifth inning, Devenuto, in left field, threw out a runner at third to halt a UNC-Pembroke rally and preserve a 4-2 Mt. Olive lead at that point. In the top of the seventh, Devenuto hit an RBI double and scored on a passed ball to push the lead to 6-2.
