This building in Driver is the new home of the Suffolk Humane Society. It will be renovated to provide ample space for many of the society’s programs.

The Suffolk Humane Society has signed a lease for a new office on Nansemond Parkway and is seeking donations and volunteers to help with needed renovations.

The new space, just down the street from the group’s current office, is located at 4300 Nansemond Parkway in Driver.

The society has been seeking a new home for several months, because the owner of the former office needed the space.

Suffolk retailer Allison Dodson owns the property and has offered a long-term, low-cost lease, according to a press release the group issued Friday.

“The Suffolk Humane Society is grateful to all who helped us with our search for a new location,” said Michele Thames, president of the board of Suffolk Humane. “While we hope to one day have a much larger building where we can offer more help for homeless pets and offer more services to the community, we are thrilled to be able to once again foster, rehabilitate and re-home homeless animals in Suffolk.”

Once renovations are complete, the new office will provide a reception area, housing for cats and kittens and a room for animals that are sick or recuperating from surgery.

The parking area will offer a location for visits by the Neuter Scooter, the Virginia Beach SPCA mobile surgical unit. The garage, once renovated, will offer an additional place for animals to recover from spay and neuter surgeries.

“We hope people will consider volunteering or donating to help renovate our new office so that we can begin to help animals as soon as possible,” Thames said. “Our upcoming Mutt Strut is a fantastic way to raise funds, have fun and help animals in Suffolk.”

The Sept. 18 Mutt Strut fundraiser will be held at Sleepy Hole Park. A pledge walk is planned as part of the event, which is the society’s main fundraiser of the year.
