Lady Cavs clinch title No. 12

Lakeland’s Kasey Smith scored three goals in a 10-0 Lady Cavalier win over Oscar Smith on Monday. The win clinches the 12th consecutive Southeastern District season field hockey crown for the Lady Cavaliers (11-4, 8-0). Lakeland finishes its regular season hosting Hickory on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Lakeland’s field hockey team won its 12th straight Southeastern District regular season championship with a 10-0 mercy-rule victory over Oscar Smith in a make-up contest Monday afternoon.

Sophomore forwards Kasey Smith and Summer Parker each scored a hat trick against the Lady Tigers. Gabrielle Wash, Jillian Bates, Alexis Albright and Jamee Albright scored one goal each.

The Lady Cavaliers improved to 11-4 overall and 8-0 in the district with one match remaining, their home finale against Hickory on Wednesday at 5 p.m. It’ll be senior day for Bates and Wash. Ten of the 14 Lady Cavaliers on the roster are sophomores or freshmen.

All 12 district season titles and 10 consecutive district tournament crowns have come under head coach Tara Worley.

The Southeastern season title clinches an Eastern Region Tournament berth for the Lady Cavaliers.

The district tournament will start Monday, Oct. 24 with the first round, and schools seeded three through six, at Nansemond River. The semifinals, on Wednesday, Oct. 26, and final, two days later, move to the U.S. Field Hockey National Training Center in Virginia Beach.

Lakeland’s outscored its eight district opponents by a total of 57-2 this season. Lakeland hasn’t lost a district match, in the season or the tournament, since 2002.
