Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:

  • Akil Freeman, junior for King’s Fork High School football: He had his biggest game of the season Friday night to help give his school its first football playoff win ever. Offensively, he had a 7-yard touchdown reception and defensively, he had two interceptions in the Bulldogs’ 31-0 triumph over host and higher seed Tabb High School.
  • Deshaun Wethington, sophomore for King’s Fork High School football: On a Friday night in which the offense of the Bulldogs was inconsistent, he gave them the early boost they needed to notch a first-ever playoff win. Scoring on runs of 47 and 80 yards, he ended up with 169 yards on 10 carries in the 31-0 victory over host and higher seed Tabb High School.
  • Summer Parker, senior for Lakeland High School field hockey: She led her team to the state championship game by scoring the go-ahead goal on Friday against James Monroe High School. Though the Lady Cavs fell in Saturday’s title game, she still put them in the game with their only goal of the day. It was the 150th of her high school career, beating the previous Lakeland record by 41 goals.
  • Kasey Smith, senior for Lakeland High School field hockey: She was part of a stellar defensive effort during a week in which the Lady Cavs faced two of their most challenging opponents. She helped hold James Monroe High School to a single goal in Friday’s state semifinal. Despite the state title loss and a myriad of offensive attacks, she helped stifle Chancellor High School for most of the game.
