Firefighters and police officers work the scene of a fire on Charles Street on Wednesday morning about 9:30 a.m. It was the second fire on the same street within eight hours.

Firefighters battled two fires across the street from each other in the 100 block of Charles Street on Wednesday morning.

The first, which was reported to 911 dispatchers about 1:55 a.m., apparently was sparked by a candle left too close to a mattress, the fire marshal’s office determined.

The family of seven, including six children, were not displaced from the home because firefighters were able to confine the fire to the upstairs bedroom and bring it under control quickly, according to a press release from city spokeswoman Diana Klink. No injuries were reported, she said.

A friend of the resident said later her friend did not want to talk about the fire.

The second fire, diagonally across the street from the first, was reported around 9:30 a.m. The house, which online tax records show is owned by C. Burch and A-One Properties LLC, was vacant but had recently been rented to a woman who was supposed to move in Friday, she told a representative of the fire marshal’s office.

The home sustained significant damage to both floors, Klink said.

The fire marshal representative was asking neighbors if they had seen anybody at the house before the fire started. The fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
