Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:

  • Kane Miskel, junior for King’s Fork High School football: He spearheaded an incredible defensive effort that kept host No. 4 Heritage High School’s offense off the board until just over 35 seconds remained in Friday night’s regional semifinal, building on a touchdown scored earlier by the defense. Though the No. 9 Bulldogs lost 13-7, his tackles, including for lost yardage, limited a Hurricanes team that started the night averaging 31.3 points per game.
  • Deshaun Wethington, sophomore King’s Fork High School football: Ending with 1,977 rushing yards this year, he was stellar even as the Bulldogs’ offense struggled in Friday night’s 13-7 regional semifinal loss to host No. 4 Heritage High School. He ran 25 times for 201 yards, including a 58-yard score, to help keep the No. 9 Bulldogs in the game before he succumbed to an injury he had battled half the season.
  • Eric Habecker, junior for Suffolk Christian Academy basketball: The Knights were routed 62-28 by conference rival Gateway Christian School on Monday, but he continued to give his team optimism for its future with his play. Though not pegged as a team leader in pre-season, he has begun to answer on the promise head coach Ron Carr saw in him, leading the Knights on Monday with 10 points.
