Sophomore Deshaun Wethington scored six of his career-high 23 points in overtime on Thursday against Oscar Smith High School to prevent King’s Fork High School from playing in its fourth consecutive double overtime contest this season.

The Bulldogs defeated the host Tigers 63-58.

“We were up by seven with a minute and 45 seconds left,” KF head coach Josh Worrell said in frustration.

Oscar Smith made a shot with four seconds to go in regulation to force overtime, but King’s Fork limited the Tigers’ chances in overtime. Lockdown defense and control of the boards were key.

For the Bulldogs, sophomore Keith Stagg had 11 points and junior Cornelius Norman chipped in 10. Wethington had five assists.

Though weary of all the extra periods, Worrell tried focusing on the bright side.

“We’re learning, we’re getting there hopefully,” he said. “It’s better to be 3-1 than to be 1-3.”

King’s Fork (3-1) hosted Indian River High School on Friday night and hosts Lake Taylor High School this evening to finish out the third annual King’s Fork Tip-Off Showcase.
