Three people in the Harbour View area are receiving post-exposure vaccines after possibly being scratched or bitten by a rabid cat.

The Suffolk Health Department received confirmation that the cat tested positive for rabies. A stray cat bit and scratched two people on May 27 in the Harbour View area. On May 29, Animal Control informed the health department another person reported being bitten by a stray cat in the same vicinity on May 23. The health department cannot determine if the same at was involved in each incident.

Rabies is preventable is the vaccine is given early and as recommended, but the disease is fatal in almost 100 percent of cases once symptoms develop.
