Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:
- Madi Wilson, freshman for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy swimming: She had a strong week in the pool across two different meets. On Wednesday, she qualified for state competition in the girls’ 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:13.44 and had a season-best mark in the 100 free. On Saturday, she produced a state-qualifying time in the 50 free (27.72 seconds) and dropped 12 seconds in the 500 free.
- Jerry Goodman, sophomore for Lakeland High School basketball: He has emerged as a threat for the Cavaliers on both ends of the court. On Friday, he contributed 15 points and clutch defense in the fourth quarter to a 66-61 win over host Nansemond River High School. Despite his team’s 68-58 loss to Booker T. Washington High School on Jan. 17 in the Bulldog Showcase, he led his team with 16 points.
- Aneka Yelverton, junior for Nansemond River High School basketball: She continued being a stalwart presence for the Lady Warriors on offense with her performance this week. She contributed a game-high 18 points to help her team defeat host Lakeland High School on Friday, 56-43.
