It is quite rare that Suffolk’s public and private schools face off in the realm of athletics. But the Jazmine Foreman Memorial Tournament at Grassfield High School was the forum for a showdown between King’s Fork High School and Nansemond-Suffolk Academy’s softball teams.

The Lady Bulldogs triumphed 2-0 in a timed tournament game that reached its allotted hour and 20 minutes two outs into the bottom of the sixth inning.

King’s Fork coach Richard Froemel admitted he felt some extra incentive for his team to get a win given the cross-city nature of the contest.

Complimenting the play of NSA junior pitcher Katie Peelen, he said, “She does what she needs to do,” referring to her placement of the ball.

But the Lady Bulldogs adjusted and finished with nine hits.

They scored both of their runs in the fourth inning after freshman Rachel Vick and sophomore Lauryn Bailey got on base. Junior Kay’Lee Justice drove them in.

“Kay’Lee crushed that ball to center,” Froemel said.

Bailey, Vick and junior Lindsay Carlesi each had two hits and freshman Madison Froemel added one.

King’s Fork senior Sydney Wash also had a hit, and in the circle, she threw 10 strikeouts, allowing no walks.

“They’ve got a great team,” NSA coach Brittany Wilkins said of King’s Fork. “I wish we could play them more than just that one time.”

She likely wanted another chance to show the Lady Bulldogs what her team could do.

“We just couldn’t hit yesterday,” she said on Friday, as the Lady Saints only managed a single hit.

Of Nansemond-Suffolk, Froemel said, “They’ve got a good nucleus.”

NSA started off the week well with a 24-0 victory over visiting Norfolk Collegiate, but after the loss to King’s Fork, the Lady Saints also fell to Grafton High School 3-2 to close out their run at the Grassfield-hosted tourney.

Then, on Friday, visiting Kenston Forest School defeated Nansemond-Suffolk 12-7.

The Lady Bulldogs also lost their other game in the Jazmine Foreman tourney, falling 2-1 to Kempsville High School.
