KF Summer League canceled

The King’s Fork Summer Basketball League has been a staple in Suffolk for the past 10 years, but league coordinator and Bulldogs coach Josh Worrell indicated on Thursday that it has been canceled for 2015.

Most arrangements had been made for the league to move forward as usual, with 12 teams from 11 schools lined up and a complete schedule formed, but an added requirement created financial concerns.

“This year I required security at the event,” King’s Fork principal Dr. Stenette Byrd stated in an email. “The coach felt that the increased cost would make it prohibitive to run.”

Asked why he decided to add the security requirement this year, Byrd started his reply by noting it is his second year with the school, and he has naturally attended some of the basketball games previously.

“Any time you have that crowd, it’s great when there are no issues, but you just want to keep everybody safe so that they can have a good time, so I just felt like that presence was needed there,” he said.

Hopeful that this is not the end of the King’s Fork Summer League, Byrd said, “Maybe we can bring it back here in the future.”

As for this summer, he stated, “Participating league coaches are exploring other venues for the event as we don’t want our students to miss out on this opportunity.”
