All three Suffolk public schools, as well as schools from the area and beyond will have teams participating in the King’s Fork High School January Basketball Showcase on Saturday in the Kennel.

King’s Fork High School junior guard Cydney Nichols, right, competes with her team during the school’s first showcase in December, and the Lady Bulldogs will take on Nansemond River High School this Saturday in the KFHS January Basketball Showcase.

Like King’s Fork’s showcase on Dec. 12, this one will raise money for the Lady Bulldogs’ basketball program, but this event will feature more Suffolk intrigue.

The Lady Bulldogs, who are 13-0 entering Wednesday’s contest against 9-2 host Nansemond River High School, will have a rematch against the Lady Warriors at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

King’s Fork activities director Randy Jessee said the “King’s Fork-Nansemond River game should be a very good matchup.”

Seeing the benefit of his team’s game in the showcase, Nansemond River coach R. Calvin Mason Sr. said, “Anytime you get a chance to play against good competition, it just makes you better,” adding that the Lady Bulldogs have a record that says they are one of the better teams in the region.

The other girls’ teams participating in the tournament will come from Lakeland High School, Oscar Smith High School, Tallwood High School and Warwick High School.

The boys’ teams playing Saturday will include Denbigh High School, George Wythe High School, King’s Fork, Lakeland, Prince George High School and Woodrow Wilson.

The Cavaliers, which are 9-3 entering Wednesday’s game at Western Branch High School, have been playing well lately and will face the challenge of containing George Wythe senior Maliek White, one of the top players in the state. Tip-off for that game on Saturday is scheduled for 7 p.m.

There is a single ticket price of $8 per person to gain admission to the showcase. Children 5 and under get in for free.
