Player of the Week nominees

Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:
- Kayla Barnes, sophomore for Lakeland High School basketball: She provided the leadership to carry her team through the frenzied environment of I.C. Norcom High School, a conference foe, on Thursday. She sank a free throw with four-tenths of a second left to give her a team a 78-77 win, finishing with 14 points and seven assists. In a Jan. 16 win, she contributed nine points, eight boards, five assists and four steals.
- Josh Covington, senior for Nansemond River High School basketball: He was once again clutch for the Warriors, this time throughout Wednesday’s home game against Kempsville High School. He hit a go-ahead free throw with 12 seconds remaining to help give his team a 48-47 win that put it above .500 for the year. He finished the game with 25 points, five assists, five steals and four rebounds.
- Cydney Nichols, junior for King’s Fork High School basketball: She has been a breakout performer for the Lady Bulldogs in their last couple of games, helping them improve to 17-0. In their 68-45 home win over Nansemond River High School on Jan. 16, she led all scorers with 22 points. In Tuesday’s 58-49 home win over Lake Taylor High School, she produced a game-high 29 points to go with 10 steals.
