The Lakeland High School Cavaliers bounced back from a tough loss against Denbigh on Thursday evening to beat Pheobus 6-4 on Friday.

Just the night before, the Cavaliers lost a home conference game to Denbigh 7-1. Nothing had seemed to go right for the Cavaliers against Denbigh.

“It was a bad night all around,” coach David Devers said.

But Devers’ team showed poise as it came back against Pheobus in another home conference game Friday.

“We needed to rebound and learn from that quick, because we had the game (Friday); then we have conference tournament next week,” Devers said.

The Cavaliers were hitting the ball better, with a much-improved defense on Friday. The pitching game was also improved from Thursday.

“Andrew Kelly went three-for-four, with two runs scored, and Dixon Mills was two-for-four, with a run scored,” Devers said.

Devers was proud of how his team performed after the previous night’s problems.

“We started the game off at the top of the first and hit the ball real well and put two runs on the board,” Devers said.

After the Denbigh game, Devers said, he spoke to his team about its mistakes and the improvements needed before facing Phoebus.

Following the Phoebus win, Devers said, “We need to find a way to build off this success into Monday’s conference tournament game against I.C. Norcom.”
