It had been 11 days since Nansemond River’s last golf match, but that did not seem to bother them much Monday afternoon. The Warriors played strong against a rival Lakeland High School team.

At Sleepy Hole Golf Course, the Warriors won 347-420. With the win, the Warriors have defeated both Lakeland and King’s Fork.

“We wrapped up the city championship, so to say,” coach Brandon Frye said. “We shot 347. I am glad we came out and were focused. We had some pretty good scores out there. Even though we hadn’t played in a while, we make practices as competitive as we can.”

By every measure, the Warriors are the more experienced team, and it showed Monday. The Warriors’ Isiah Marquez was the medalist on Monday, with a score of 81. Marquez is satisfied with his progress from last year to now.

“Last year, I did not play as well as I wanted to,” Marquez said. “I’m glad I’m playing consistent in the low 80s this year. I feel great about being the medalist and helping my team. This match was as important as any other match.”

For the future, Frye will like to see his team continue to improve. In a few weeks, Nansemond River will be competing in the conference tournament, and Frye wants to see that final push from his team. The Warriors are 6-3-1 on the year.

“We want to continue to keep improving our average. You want to be playing your best going into postseason play.”

Next for the Warriors is an out-of-district match against Churchland at the Riverfront Golf Club at 1 p.m. Sept 15.
