Cavs coast to second round

Lakeland High School (6-5) snapped a three-game losing streak with a playoff victory over Poquoson High School on Friday night.

The Cavs offense struck early and often, as they put up 41 of their 46 points in the first half.

“I’m proud of them guys. They did a good job out there,” Cavs coach Kevin Knight said. “The running lanes were there. While we were watching the film, this week we knew we could possibly take advantage of some opportunities, and we did.”

Senior running back Damontra Milteer led the Cavaliers as he again rushed for 200-plus yards. He finished with 254 yards rushing and four touchdowns. He currently has 1,862 yards through 11 games and has broken the Lakeland career rushing yards record.

“That accomplishment is great,” Milteer said. “My teammates made me feel real special, and the win just made it a perfect night.”

The Cavs avenged their loss from last year’s playoffs against Poquoson, and they did more than enough scoring. Last year, the Cavs were shut out in a 28-0 Islanders victory.

Milteer was not the only player with a big night. Nashun Overton added 90 rushing yards on two carries and a touchdown. After a 150-yard receiving performance last week against Nansemond River, Alajuwun Langston followed that performance up with 148 all-purpose yards and a touchdown. Sophomore quarterback Tyquan Holloman added 80 passing yards and a touchdown to go along with 64 rushing yards.

“Whoever had the ball out there was making plays,” coach Knight said. “We had a great week of practice this week. The energy was there. The focus was there. We were having fun. We told the guys what to look for. Everything they were told to do, they went out there and did. It was great watching them go out there and have so much fun.”

“This win was huge,” Overton said about the win over Poquoson. “It not only snapped a three-game losing streak, but it was a statement win for us. Our offensive performance set the tone the whole game. They beat us 28-0 last year, and we wanted to show that we can score.”

Next for the Cavs is a semifinal matchup with Tabb High School, with the date and time to be determined. The Cavs will host again on their home field and are looking to carry this momentum into the next game. This will be the first time Lakeland has hosted two playoff games in the same season.

“We have to continue to play strong if we want to reach our goal as champs,” Milteer said. “Our goal will be the same we had this game — go out and give our fans the show they deserve.”
