King’s Fork to host showcase

King’s Fork High School will host its second showcase of the 2016-2017 season this Saturday, featuring six teams including two of the top girls’ basketball teams in Hampton Roads.

The showcase will feature teams from all around Hampton Roads, one team from Greensville County and one from North Carolina as well. There will be four Suffolk teams competing in the showcase. Nansemond River High School’s girls’ basketball team will be featured, along with King’s Fork boys’ and girls’ basketball teams and Lakeland’s boys’ basketball team as well.

The premier matchup of the showcase will be the Lady Bulldogs going up against the Lady Cavs of Princess Anne. Both teams are considered among the best not only in Hampton Roads but also in the state. Both teams are widely expected to compete for a championship this year.

Princess Anne has won three consecutive state championships at the 5A level, including last year. King’s Fork was a game away from the state championship last year at the 4A level. The two will clash in an exhibition non-conference game that should be exciting for all who attend.

“We have an opportunity to play one of the best four teams, if not the best team in our area,” Lady Bulldogs coach Maurice Fofana said. “They have a high level caliber of players. The opportunity will be great for us.”

“We all feel good about this game,” the Lady Bulldogs Amesha Miller said. “We have to make sure we execute and get back on defense and give ourselves the best chance to win.”

Fofana believes games against teams like Princess Anne give the team an opportunity to gauge progress and see where the team is. The non-conference schedule has been tough for the Lady Bulldogs thus far, but that’s exactly how Fofana wanted it.

“We look to be playing in March. In doing so, we have to see where our flaws are,” Fofana said. “Playing against these tough teams gives us a chance to be prepared when the postseason comes.”

In other matchups, Nansemond River will get a chance to face Conference 10 opponent Warwick. The Bulldogs will face a Smithfield team that has already surpassed 10 wins for the season.

Games will start at 11:30 a.m., and the lineup will include four boys’ games and two girls’ games. Admission for 12 years of age and older will be $10. Ages 11 and under will be $6.
