Nansemond-Suffolk Academy’s softball team got its eighth win of the season Monday afternoon and is currently ranked No. 2 in VISAA Division II poll.
The Lady Saints dominated Norfolk Collegiate Monday afternoon by the score of 14-1. It was their first game of conference play. Emerson Puzey pitched a shutout in the first three innings. Delaney Taylor added a home run, two triples and two runs batted in for the Lady Saints. NSA’s win put them at 8-2 on the season.
“They got the job done. They came out focused,” Lady Saints coach Brittany Thornburg said. “They did what they were supposed to do.”
“We try to go into each game with the same mentality no matter who we play,” Taylor said. “We go into the game focused and ready to get the job done. I’m very proud of my team and how we all played.”
The first VISAA softball rankings were released Tuesday, and NSA stood firm in the No. 2 spot. Fellow TCIS competitor Greenbrier Christian was ranked at the top. Both teams are expected to be among the two best teams not only in the TCIS but also in the state.
Though NSA is ranked high, Thornburg still doesn’t feel her team has played its best game yet. She feels that it is a good thing in her eyes.
“We are still capable of doing more,” she said. “I tell the girls just to come out each practice and game hungry. We want to get better each day.”
NSA will play Southampton Academy at home at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
