The Nansemond River High School girls’ volleyball team set itself up well for the looming playoffs with two wins this week.
In a 3-0 win on senior night Thursday, the Lady Warriors defeated King’s Fork High School. The win followed up on a successful showing against Lakeland High School on Tuesday.
Just one regular season game remains on the schedule.
In the first meeting this season, the Lady Bulldogs won, but the Lady Warriors were able to bounce back.
Nansemond River also honored its seniors before the game. Seniors Briana Autrey, Bria Washington and Ashira McClain played the whole first set.
“The girls played well together,” Lady Warriors coach Nikka Gatling said. “They played like they had something to prove out there. King’s Fork is a good team, but I like what my girls showed out there.”
Gatling is liking where her team is now heading into the playoffs after hoping it will come together all season long. The first-year Lady Warriors coach likes her team’s skill but feels the players can be inconsistent sometimes mentally. However, they are starting to become more consistent at the right time.
“Better late than never I guess,” Gatling joked. “The girls are continuing to build their confidence. We are getting there, but I sometimes see during the game we may doubt ourselves. I like where we are right now, though.”
Nansemond River will take on Hickory High School on the road at 6 p.m. Tuesday to finish the regular season.
