Sophomore Clint Wright Jr. was selected All-Region for the Lakeland High School Cavaliers.

Lakeland’s boys’ basketball team had a whole new look this year. They came into the season without a single player who possessed varsity experience. They went through the season improving each game and even surprising some of the top teams in South Hampton Roads with how close some of the games were.

Even though Lakeland didn’t have much win-loss success, the team showed it would be strong in the years to come. The Cavaliers made the Class 3 Region A tournament and defeated Southampton High School before being eliminated by the eventual regional champions, Hopewell High School.

Lakeland not only earned an all-region selection but also had a couple of honorable mentions as well. Wright Jr. was selected to the first team all-region, while Keimari Artis and Raymond Bellamy were selected as honorable mention. All-Region teams are voted on by the coaches, a process Cavaliers Coach Clint Wright Sr. described as difficult because all the teams do not get to see each other play. Had more coaches been able to see Lakeland play, they could possibly have had more selections on either team.

Wright Jr., Bellamy and Artis will return next year as part of a more experienced Lakeland team that will look to improve its record.
