Williams strikes out 14 in win

Gage Williams struck out 14 batters in the Warriors’ win over the Bulldogs.

The Nansemond River High School baseball team took on rival King’s Fork High School on the road Friday evening. The Warriors earned themselves a 7-1 win behind Williams’ big game. He earned the win while striking out 14 and allowing two hits and one run.

The Warriors knew playing against the Bulldogs was an important matchup for becoming the top team in the city and felt good about how they played Friday.

“The games always mean a little more when you play your cross-town rival,” senior Matt Culbert said. “Gage threw a great game, and we were able to get our offense going to come out with a big win. This was one game closer to helping us get to postseason form.”

The Warriors’ biggest inning came in the fifth, when they scored five runs. Culbert added two hits, while Bryson Dansberry and Jarett Mayer stole bases. Mayer also added two runs.

King’s Fork was unable to get much going. Nansemond River will host Hickory High School at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. King’s Fork will go on the road to face other rival Lakeland High School at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
