The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy boys’ lacrosse team traveled to Norfolk Collegiate School and returned home the victors of a 9-8 double-overtime thriller on Thursday.

The Saints fell behind early, down 5-0 after the first quarter. They closed to 5-4 at halftime, and on the strength of stifling defense by sophomore David Gough and excellent goalkeeping by junior Dan Hotte, NSA held Norfolk Collegiate and took its first lead, 8-7, in the fourth.

With six seconds remaining in regulation, the Mighty Oaks scored on a breakaway to send the game to overtime. It was sophomore Addison Peak who brought the game to its conclusion by beating his man one-on-one and burying the ball in the net in the second extra period.

The Saints’ junior Jacob Edwards led all scorers with five goals, including an impressive blazing left-handed rip. Peak finished with four goals and senior Harris Howell had four assists in addition to winning 14-of-18 face-offs.

Hotte had 12 saves, including several clutch rejections in the overtime periods.

On Saturday, Nansemond-Suffolk (7-7) will host The Covenant School, the No. 1-ranked Division II team in the state according to the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association.
