Nansemond-Suffolk Academy boys’ lacrosse team has started its season strong after a slow season last year.

The team finished 4-11 last year after a multitude of setbacks, including significant injuries and illnesses. But four years ago, the Saints were in the state championship, and the year after they were in the semifinal game.

Coach T.W Johnson is excited about getting the team back to that level of play. Right now, NSA is 3-1, and their only loss came on a last-second goal.

“I have a really good group of guys,” Johnson said. “It is a group that is passionate about the sport. They put a lot of work in during the winter. We think that’s going to help us improve.”

Johnson admits that he was cautiously optimistic about this season. His confidence continues to grow each day because of what his players have been doing. The Saints have a strong group of seniors who have been under Johnson for a while and are leading the way for the team.

“Not only do we have a good senior group, but we have them spread out all over the field,” Johnson said. “It’s good we’re able to have that leadership at both ends of the field.”

Despite a strong effort, the Saints do feel that they still have areas to improve.

“We know we can get better between now and the end of the season,” Johnson said. “Our goal is to be playing our best in May for the conference and state tournament. As our skill level continues to improve, other areas will fall in line with it.”

NSA defeated Trinity Episcopal Monday afternoon. They will start conference play on the road against Norfolk Collegiate at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday
