Robby Tew was voted Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week after passing for four touchdowns and rushing for one in the Saints’ 63-14 win over Greenbrier Christian Academy.

Playing quarterback is not an easy task. It comes with pressure, and some argue that it is the hardest position to play in sports. Tew, the senior quarterback for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, tries to play the game the right way. He doesn’t want to let his teammates down.

“I never try to get too high or too low when I’m out there, so I just block out the noise,” he said. “When you win, you are the hero and everyone loves you, but when you lose it is pretty much the opposite.”

There was no question that Tew was one of the heroes for his team in its 63-point effort against GCA. He went 10-of-13 for 250 yards and five touchdowns. The senior believes that his performance this year overall has been solid, but he always feels there is room for improvement. Before the season, he set a few goals for himself. Ultimately, he wants to bring NSA another championship. By season’s end he also wants to account for 40 touchdowns. Even though he set a few goals, he does not think about them much; he just goes out and plays.

Tew is inspired by God first and his father second. His father has been teaching him about the game since he was 7 years old. Coach Mike Biehl also inspires Tew. Every night, he knows his coach has his back. The love he has for the game motivates him every day to compete at the highest level.

“I still feel pure joy just going out on the practice field,” he said. “I work hard to have success on Friday nights, because there is absolutely no greater feeling than being under those lights with my brothers.”

“Robby has grown as a quarterback,” Biehl said. “What I like most about him is that he allows himself to be coached. He wants to do whatever he can for the team.”

Tew prepares for Friday nights by getting three to four lifts in a week and also making sure he gets proper nutrition. Throughout the week, he goes through the same pregame routines. NSA got off to a slow start to the season but has been coming together during the last few weeks.

At the moment, Tew is considering a couple of schools but is uncertain about where he is going to attend. Along with football, Tew also plays baseball and will take time to decide which sport he would like to play in the college.
