The Saints are on a two-game win streak after their victory over Peninsula Catholic School Tuesday night.

The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy boys’ basketball team has built up some serious momentum in its past two games. On Saturday, the Saints hosted and defeated Cox High School, a tough team in the Southampton Roads area. They later carried that momentum into a Tuesday night home meeting against Peninsula Catholic and turned that into a 28-point win, defeating their conference opponent 70-42.

Kemauri Spencer led the team with 20 points and 10 rebounds. He also added three steals and three assists. George Pettaway had double-digit assists with 10 Tuesday night, and Spencer Salmon added 13 points and 10 rebounds.

“Everyone is buying into the system and has stepped into their roles in the system,” NSA coach Larry Ward said. “It has been very pleasant. With how we have played lately, it shows we can play with the best in the area. We have a small room for error. So, we just have to make sure we play our type of game.”

When playing in conference games, Ward believes the biggest thing is controlling tempo and making shots, and he believed that the Saints did that Tuesday night. Ward wants his team to play in big games and credits the NSA fans for showing great support the last few games.

“Here on this campus, we want big games on Friday and Saturday,” Ward said. “We had a nice crowd Saturday and Tuesday night and are hoping for a nice turnout against Walsingham as well. We want to make our school community proud.”

The Saints believe that the reason for their high level of play recently is that they have been playing to each other’s strengths.

“We have been competing hard, and it has translated over to games,” Jaden Freeman said. “Everyone understands what they bring to the team. The return of our point guard George Pettaway has made us a better team. If we continue to play for each other and as a team, we will continue to win big games.”

NSA will host Walsingham Academy at 7 p.m. Thursday.
