Katelin Kight, left, resident services assistant at Lake Prince Woods, and Teda Barrows, the wellness director, prepare to do battle in Cupcake Wars, which will be fought Friday at the retirement community.

The frosting will be flying on Friday at Lake Prince Woods as the community hosts “Cupcake Wars” to benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life.

Based on a popular Food Network show, the event is set for 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Friday at Lake Prince Woods, 100 Anna Goode Way. There will be seven contestants, including local bakery owners and Lake Prince Woods employees.

Tickets for spectators are $5 and include cupcake samples and beverages.

“All the proceeds are to support the Relay For Life,” said Denise Brown, director of resident services. “We have always supported the Relay For Life, but this is the first Cupcake War that we’ve done.”

The contestants will bake the cupcakes ahead of time but frost and decorate them during the competition. Several flavors are planned, including orange creamsicle from Lake Prince Woods wellness director Ted Barrows — who holds a blue ribbon from the Isle of Wight County Fair for her cupcakes — and Key lime pie from Katelin Kight, the resident services assistant at Lake Prince Woods.

Judges from the community will evaluate the cupcakes on taste and creativity.

“I have been selling tickets in excess of what I hope actually come,” Brown said.

Whoever wins the cupcake war, everyone will be a winner in the war against cancer.

Cupcake decorating begins at 2 p.m., with judging at 2:30, awards at 2:45 and tastings from 2:45 to 3:30.
