Dominion Virginia Power now has 10,000 customers enrolled in the Dominion Green Power program, an affordable way to help the environment by supporting renewable energy.

“We are extremely pleased with this program’s continuing success,” Ken Barker, Dominion vice president of customer solutions and energy conservation, said in a press release. “This voluntary program enables customers to ensure that renewable energy is delivered to the grid, and it encourages the development of new renewable power facilities. Green power also reduces the environmental impact of generating electricity from fossil fuels.”

Dominion Green Power has been available since Jan. 1, 2009 and is a voluntary program that gives the customer a way to support renewable energy and harness the benefits.

Renewable energy can reduce carbon emissions, creating “green” jobs and stimulating the economy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, thereby enhancing our nation’s energy security.

There are different levels of enrollment for individuals that can be as little as an additional $2 a month.

Signing up for the $10 a month option for one year helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions equal to removing one car from the road for a year.

Each customer enrolled in the 100 percent option, which adds 15 cents per kilowatt hour to your normal bill for one year prevents the release of 8.5 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, which is equivalent to removing one and a half automobiles from the road for a year or planting 219 trees.

For every customer who enrolls in the 100 percent option between Oct. 1 and Nov. 15, the company will also donate a tree to Project Plant It!, which provides tree seedlings to third graders to be planted in Virginia on Arbor Day.

The Dominion Green Power program has been approved by the Virginia State Corporation Commission and has achieved Green-e Energy certification from the Center for Resource Solutions, a national nonprofit organization. Green-e Energy is the nation’s leading independent consumer protection program for the sale of renewable energy.

Customers can find out more or sign up for Dominion Green Power by visiting the company’s website at www.dom.com or by calling the Dominion Customer Call Center toll-free at 1-866-DOM-HELP.

The program is part of Dominion’s effort to produce power from renewable energy sources.

Virginia set a goal of having 15 percent of base year electricity energy sales from renewable energy sources by 2025.

The Dominion Green Power program is separate from the company’s own renewable energy initiatives.
