Learning how to respond to an emergency is easier than you might think. All you have to do is visit www.redcross.org or call the Suffolk Chapter of the American Red Cross and sign up for first aid and CPR.

The organization plans CPR training classes locally on Jan. 22 and Feb. 5.

Each year, the Red Cross trains more than 2 million people in adult, infant and child and professional rescue CPR. The courses teach participants how to perform lifesaving skills, prevent and prepare for emergencies, keep their families safe and healthier and prevent heart disease.

“Everyone should be trained in Red Cross CPR, because you never know when you may need to use it,” said Lisa Harrell, director of health and safety services for the Suffolk Chapter of the American Red Cross.

“You should take a refresher course every year to refresh your memory of the life-saving skills. Remember, if you don’t use it, you lose it.
