The Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters is growing with the community.

CHKD administrators and employees of CHKD’s Suffolk Pediatrics broke ground on an expansion Monday.

“There has been significant growth in the past years, and it’s critical to have space to continue to grow,” said John Hamilton, vice president of physician practice management. “This just happened to be the perfect fit.”

The site on Hillpoint Road will be the new home to the practice, whose doctors responded to 20,000 visits last year, according to Jo Kittrell, director of physician practice management.

The practice’s current location is located on Burnett’s Way.

The new building will add 2,000 square feet and provide additional parking for patients. It also will provide eight additional exam rooms and eKIDS, the hospital’s electronic filing system, will be accessible from all rooms.

“We outgrew our space much faster than we ever dreamed possible,” Kittrell said. “We’re excited about this project and what it means for our patients.”

The site is expected to be completed by September 2011, according to Kittrell.
